The Outer Hebrides is really benefitting from Gaelic this morning…as Eilean Siar is being hailed once again by media throughout the UK as " the best place to live for life satisfaction and was also in the top five for happiness and worthiness."

This comes from the UK Government's annual happiness survey…but the reason to be thankful for Gaelic is simple.  Using Eilean Siar as the official name for the Islands, rather than Western Isles, has put our islands first in a little list of islands including Orkney and Shetland.

The office data sheets from the Office for National Statistics lists the Islands together – "Eilean Siar, Orkney & Shetland" - but the majority of the media have only read the first line!
