Two major events in South Harris this weekend will mean congestion on the roads as well as boosted visitor numbers.

The Harris Open Golf tournament is taking place at Scarista on the afternoon of Friday August 9th and all day Saturday 10th, with a considerable number of parked cars expected through the village.

Also on Saturday, Marathon Hebrides will be based at Talla na Mara at Horgabost and runners will be pounding the roads between Leverburgh, Rodel and the finish on Seilebost machair, with a rolling programme of road closures to keep competitors safe.

Registration at Talla na Mara is between 5 and 8pm on Friday and arrangements for parking both then and on race day, Saturday, have been made for spectators, supporters and runners at the machair at Seilebost, with a shuttle bus taking runners to the race start at Leverburgh.

The A859 from Rodel to Leverburgh is closed from 10am to 10.30am on Saturday, the Strond to Borrisdale road from 10.20am to 11.15am and the C79 Golden Road from 10.40am to 12 noon. The Langabhat road is closed between 10.50am and 1pm, and runners will be heading north between Leverburgh and Seilebost on the last leg.

Stornoway police have advised drivers not involved in either of the weekend’s events to avoid the area during Saturday if possible, as there will be considerable congestion.
