The Bernera boyhood of Donald Macleod is to be celebrated with the launch of a new bilingual book from Stornoway publishers Acair next month.
Eadar Dà Shaoghal: Between Two Worlds is based on Donald’s successful Radio nan Gaidheal series of the same name, vividly portraying the sights, sounds and emotions of his boyhood on the Isle of Bernera, Lewis.
Donald has a colourful professional life, with a track record in rock music, psychology and broadcasting. Unsurprisingly his stories are vivid evocations of scenes and feelings – the bustle of the fank, the excitement of a first day at school and the warmth, humour and sorrows of his own community.
Donald has lived in an English world for much of his life, but his identity as a Gael shapes who he is. In the foreword to his book he says: “I always wanted to know who I am and where I came from. I was sure that it was the years I spent in Circeabost that created me as a person… I wrote down my remembrances in English – in order to preserve them for myself and so that my family could read them.”
Between Two Worlds is to be launched on the evening of Wednesday August 7th with a celebratory event at Bernera Hall, where he will read from his book and guests will share stories and songs from Bernera. The book is available from Acair (www.acairbooks.com) priced £15.99.
