Two Lewis dancers who travelled to Orlando in Florida to compete in a world championship competition have won their way through to their finals later today (Friday April 26th).

Abbie Morrison (17) from Back and her coach, Stornoway girl Kayleigh Nicolson, were both picked for Team Scotland and headed off to the world cheerleading championships, now taking place at the Walt Disney World resort in Florida.

Both girls were in the teams that entered the world top 10 yesterday, after pushing through the semi-finals in their disciplines of jazz and hip hop. Team Scotland will now perform in the finals at 10.40am and 1.30pm Florida time (3.40pm and 6.30pm British time), with the performances being streamed live at http://live.cheerunion.org

The girls were accompanied on their travels by trainer and mentor Kirstie Anderson, who’s been sending back regular reports on their progress in the sunshine state. Kirstie said last night: “So proud of Team Scotland jazz team, just performed at worlds and smashed it! Especially proud of our wee superstar Abbie Morrison, who made it all the way from the Isle of Lewis to Orlando to compete!”

Meanwhile Kayleigh this morning posted her gratitude for island support, writing: “Thanks for everyone’s support from back home, thank you to my coaches, to my team mates for helping and guiding me through this amazing experience, to my coaching partner Kirstie and to ICU Worlds for holding a great semi-finals. Top 10 in the whole world! Go Scotland!”
