Community spirit and friendship came to the aid of a young couple facing a £20,000 bill to dispose of unwanted earth and rock.
On Thursday the plea went on Twitter and on welovestornoway.com - anyone want 200 to 300 tonnes of soil and rocks from a family’s home-building site on Bakers Road, Newmarket, Stornoway?
That was the appeal from new mum, musician and Harris Tweed Authority worker Jayne Hepburn Macmillan and her husband Kevin.
And help was quickly to hand - with the welovestornoway.com article being read more than 1280 times – and by yesterday afternoon Jayne was able to say: “We now have somewhere for it to go. We’re quite overwhelmed by the amount of people who asked around for us and tried to help. It makes us all the more keen to build a house in our wonderful little community. Ceud mìle taing."
Earlier, also on Twitter, she told how they have been in the process of building their own house for almost three years now.
“In a place where depopulation is a real problem, we’re battling against a lot of unexpected odds.”
But at least one more challenge is overcome now.
