A group of airport staff who cycled from Eilean Glas lighthouse to the Butt of Lewis in September have quadrupled the cash they hoped to raise for cancer charities.

Fifteen cyclists, including airport firefighters, security staff and air traffic controllers, made the 135 kilometre trip ‘Lighthouse2Lighthouse’ from Scalpay to Ness in glorious sunshine on Saturday September 8th, planning to raise £1,500 for two cancer charities.

But with all donations collected in – online via JustGiving and in person through sponsorships and donations en route, it turns out the total raised is a staggering £6,253.

Now cheques have been given for £2,001 to Macmillan Cancer Support’s Lewis and Harris branch and for £4,252 to the Western Isles Cancer Care Initiative.

Organiser Donald Macmillan said: “We are all absolutely delighted and very thankful to all that sponsored us to help us quadruple our target. We are also planning for next year and have decided on Airport2Airport.”

Whether that’s from Stornoway to Benbecula, or as far as Barra, the team haven’t yet given away!
